Equality & Diversity British Values

Promoting Fundamental British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is "right" and "wrong", all people living in England are subject to its law.

The Key Values are:

  • democracy
  • rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect
  • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

British Values at Norbreck Primary Academy

Embedding British Values in our curriculum is a process we are continually developing.

The following are some of the ways we currently work.

  • Issues addressed through assemblies particularly in promoting mutual respect and inclusion & tolerance for different faiths & beliefs. Also taught through our RE curriculum. Individual Liberty and Democracy are also addressed through assemblies.
  • Reception & KS1 follow the PATHS programme which is designed to empower all children to develop the fundamental, social & emotional learning skills which will enable them to make positive choices throughout life.
  • Our PSHE curriculum is from Coram Life Education – SCARF. Alongside this is a regular visit from the Lancashire Life Bus.
  • BBC Newsround is used in Year 2 & throughout KS2 as a vehicle for discussion about current world issues.
  • Democratically elected School Council.
  • Playground buddies & leaders.
  • Digital leaders.
  • We elect a Head Boy & Head Girl and their deputies, senior prefects and prefects every year.
  • All children are involved in creating a set of classroom rules at the beginning of each academic year.
  • We have a family worker/learning mentor who provides opportunities for restorative approaches to resolving conflict (Individual liberty).
  • Regular Creative weeks & days address some of the fundamentals of British Values. For example – we celebrated the Platinum Jubilee for the Queen and then together mourned her passing. Diversity is celebrated in a variety of ways - have had Faith days and Remembrance days which we continue every year.
  • Posters around school promote discussion.
  • We ensure that storybooks in our class libraries include all different facets of our society.
  • We promote attendance....a skill for life and get over 96% as a school with many getting 100% attendance.

Equality Statement at Norbreck Primary Academy

At Norbreck Primary Academy, we are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all our students and staff, in line with the Equality Act 2010. Our aim is to reduce disadvantage, discrimination, and inequality, while promoting diversity across our school community—amongst our pupils, staff, and the wider community in which we work.

We believe in teaching our pupils the importance of equality, helping them understand the different forms of discrimination and the impact it can have. As part of our curriculum, we foster an inclusive environment where every child is encouraged to reach their full potential. When pupils encounter barriers to their success, we approach these challenges with sensitivity and care, providing the support they need to overcome them.

At Norbreck Primary Academy, we are committed to ensuring that our pupils adhere to our behaviour expectations, enabling them to fully engage in all aspects of school life, flourish, and become the best versions of themselves.

We do not tolerate discrimination on any grounds, as outlined in the Equality Act 2010. The following are known as the Protected Characteristics, and we ensure no discrimination occurs based on these characteristics, except where it is permitted by law (such as when pupils are grouped based on age):

  • Age (relating to staff only)
  • Disability
  • Gender Re-assignment
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership (relating to staff only)
  • Pregnancy and Maternity
  • Race
  • Religion, Faith or Belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual Orientation

As a school and employer, we also do not accept:

  • Direct or Indirect Discrimination
  • Harassment
  • Victimisation

We comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty, giving careful consideration to this duty when making decisions, taking actions, and developing policies. In line with the Equality Act 2010, we will publish our equality objectives and provide information about how we are fulfilling our Public Sector Equality Duty. This information will be updated annually, with objectives reviewed and updated every four years. Details of this are available on our website.

Statutory Duties

We are fully committed to meeting all statutory duties under the Race Relations Act (2000), Disability Equality Duty (2005), and the Equality Act (2010).

Norbreck Primary Academy acknowledges its statutory duty to:

  • Eliminate discrimination, harassment, and victimisation
  • Promote equality of access and opportunity within our school and in the wider community
  • Encourage positive attitudes towards diversity and foster good relationships between individuals of different backgrounds, genders, cultures, faiths, abilities, and ethnicities

The leadership team and governors at Norbreck Primary Academy regularly review our progress in meeting our equality objectives, ensuring that we continue to promote an inclusive environment for all students, regardless of the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.
