Writing
"You can make anything by writing."
CS Lewis
At Norbreck, we work hard to encourage a love of writing. We want our children to leave school with the skills of an excellent writer.
At the start of each academic year, we begin with the 'Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar' to build a sturdy foundation for our pupils to excel from. Grammar, sentence structure and punctuation are taught explicitly and we make sure our children have enough practice to gain high degrees of fluency in spelling and handwriting. We gradually build the writing tasks we introduce, ensuring our children have the required knowledge and skills in place first.
We start off by looking at the unpunctuated texts as a whole class to find the verbs. Once we have found the verb, we can work out which subject it belongs to.
We work collaboratively to find the subject and verb in each independent clause.
Then we highlight which independent clause each subject and verb belong to. After that, we look for any leftovers and determine which independent clause they belong to.
Once we know this, we can work out where the full stop should go and go back to add the capital letter.
Pupil Voice
We engage with children from across the school, spanning from EYFS to Year 6, to explore their thoughts and feelings about writing. You can view their insights in the documents below.
